- These potatoes turn out crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
- Smashed potatoes are savory bite-sized snacks that can be dipped into ranch as an appetizer!
- Budget-friendly smashed potatoes are wholesome and tasty snacks that are perfect for filling up a crowd!
- No need to boil on the stove, turn on the oven in this easy recipe, or dirty extra dishes like a baking sheet, the air fryer does it all!
Ingredients and Variations
Potatoes – Small white, Yukon golds, or red baby (AKA ‘new’) potatoes have thin skins that don’t need peeling and have a creamy texture and a buttery flavor. Fingerling potatoes also work well and make for an impressive presentation. Sweet potatoes can be used if they are peeled and cut into small pieces before using in Step 2.
Seasonings – The basic seasonings make this recipe versatile enough to enjoy on its own, with a dip or sauce, or as a side dish. Swap the rosemary for thyme, add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for some heat, or switch in your favorite spices like garlic powder and onion powder. Ranch seasoning, taco, chili, or even fajita seasoning will add a new spin to match the main dish!
Variations – Top smashed potatoes with shredded cheddar, bacon bits, and green onions, or make an aioli with garlic and mayonnaise and drizzle over the tops before serving. Sour cream and salsa are also tasty choices for topping onto smashed potatoes! Try them with some air fried cheese curds and brown gravy for a poutine inspired appetizer to remember.

Pro Tips and Tricks
- For best results, select potatoes that are roughly the same size so they cook evenly. Larger baby potatoes can be cut in half, cooked, and smashed.
- Always preheat the air fryer so the potatoes cook quickly and get golden brown edges, and leave space between them so the hot air can circulate properly.
- Cook smashed potatoes in batches and keep them warm in the oven. Just before serving, pop them under the broiler for extra crispy edges!
- Keep leftover air fryer smashed potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Freeze them in a zippered bag for up to a month.
- Reheat leftovers in the air fryer with a sprinkle of fresh parmesan cheese.
